The course in one example

A weak request becomes a checked document.

See how a vague one-line request turns into a structured prompt, a usable draft and a document you have checked and can put your name to.

  1. Weak request

    First attempt

    • “Write something about the
    • new leave policy for staff”
    • No audience, goal or format
  2. Structured prompt

    • Goal: explain the change
    • Audience: all staff
    • Context: policy summary
    • Format: 200 words, 3 headings
    • Tone: plain English
  3. Draft

    What’s changing in July

    • What changes and when
    • What you need to do
    • Where to ask questions
  4. Checked document

    • Dates match the policy (Checked)
    • No personal data in prompt (Checked)
    • Tone suits all staff (Checked)
    • Manager sign-off (Action needed)

Illustrative example A prepared demonstration of the workflow you learn. It is not live AI output, and the names and figures are examples.

Who it's for

Anyone new to ChatGPT, or using it occasionally, who wants dependable habits for everyday work.

Experience needed: None needed. Comfortable with email and documents is enough.

Problems it solves

If this sounds familiar

  • Prompts that produce generic, unusable answers
  • Long documents that take too long to read and summarise
  • Drafts that don't sound like you or your organisation
  • Uncertainty about what is safe to paste into ChatGPT

Outcomes

By the end you can

  • Write clear prompts with context, constraints and examples
  • Summarise and compare long documents accurately
  • Turn rough notes into drafts that sound like you
  • Analyse a spreadsheet and explain what it shows
  • Spot errors and invented facts before they spread
  • Apply your organisation's privacy and usage rules

Practical exercises

What you practise

  1. Exercise 1

    Rewrite three weak prompts

Take real prompts that produced poor answers and rebuild them with context, constraints and an example.

  2. Exercise 2

    Weekly update from rough notes

Turn a page of notes into a status update, then edit it until it sounds like you.

  3. Exercise 3

    Report digest

Summarise a long, non-confidential document into decisions and open questions, then verify three claims against the source.

  4. Exercise 4

    Spreadsheet explanation

Ask ChatGPT to describe what a small sample dataset shows, then check the figures yourself.

Requirements

Before you come

Account

A ChatGPT account. A free account works for the exercises, though the free tier has tighter limits on file uploads and data analysis. If your organisation provides a work account, use that so you practise inside your own usage rules.

Equipment

A laptop with a current browser and a stable internet connection, plus two or three non-confidential documents from your own work.

Experience

None needed. Comfortable with email and documents is enough.

Data

Use only non-confidential material in exercises. We show you how to check your organisation's AI policy and what not to paste into an assistant.

Questions

Before you register

Is this course right for a beginner?

Yes. It assumes no experience with ChatGPT. People who already use it daily usually get more from a role-based course such as AI for Marketing and Content.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT account?

No. A free account works for the exercises. The free tier has tighter limits on file uploads and data analysis, so a work account is better if your organisation provides one.

How is the course delivered?

Live online with a trainer, for individuals across Australia. Teams of six or more can book it as a private session built around their own documents and policies.
